Who We Are

Trans Support Community Based Organization (TSO) was formed in the year in 2017 by a group of three transgender, intersex, and gender non-conforming (ITGNC) individuals from Western Kenya region met after benefiting from the Human rights and advocacy Programme supported by the ASTRAEA Lesbian Foundation through NYARWEK Network. This group saw the benefit of forming a transgender organization that could meet and share ideas beyond human rights and sexual reproductive health and rights to respond to the needs of Transgender, intersex, and gender non-conforming (ITGNC) individuals in rural areas of Western Kenya.
In 2019 November, Trans Support was registered as a Community Based Organization under the department of social development to create visibility, increase opportunities and enhance the well-being of Intersex, Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming people in Western Kenya. The organization has worked tirelessly to amplify the voices of ITGNC persons with limited funding since inception, however our work is well-known and documented. Some of our achievements during this period include a Strong leadership presence, such as board and staffing, where we have ensured highly qualified board members and staff that understand the experience of being ITGNC persons. We have established a safe place that is operational and catering for the security needs for ITGNC persons.

Above all, ITGNC consists of trans folks brought together by collective experiences and a deep desire to change the landscape so that ITGNC persons joining us may lead more dignified lives. We address scars of discrimination and first-hand experience of what it means to be invisible in our community and country. Our bodies bear testimonies to the worst that can happen to a trans person including being raped, locked in jails, beaten to a pulp by a mob and mocked everywhere. We exist to provide hope that all can be well and that being trans is not an abnormality. TSO is committed to embodying the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion
